What High-Speed Trading Looks Like in Thousandths of a Second

Almost Beautiful in a Fiscally Reckless Way

The GIF is courtesy of NPR’s Radiolab in which they do a segment on high-speed trading in their “Speed” themed episode. The GIF itself is taken from Nanex, a research group that studies billions of transactions made by Wall Street every day. It’s said that Nanex’s database is twenty times the size of NASA’s!

Right now you may be asking, “why do we have more information on the stock market than we do of space?” Well, in cases of a “flashcrash”, groups like Nanex can look back at all this data and assess where it exactly took place and why. I would recommend everyone go listen to the Radiolab segment "Fast Cash Dash Flash Crash Clash". Crazy interesting. (Via Radiolab)

    1. I think they are calling high-speed trading “fiscally reckless” because those firms are fighting off regulation of any kind and they are creating technical glitches in the market from the large number of trades in a short amount of time.
